In the backwoods of 1905 Brazil, siblings Francisca and Oswalda get word they are to travel to Rio to meet up with their sister Amelia. Amelia, who has made a name for herself as maid to famous actress Sandra Bernhardt, has found work for them as seamstresses on Bernhardt's upcoming world tour. But when the sisters arrive in Rio, they discover Amelia is dead and Bernhardt in hysterics. Deciding to stick around with the theater troupe anyway, the country sisters find themselves amusingly out of place in the city.
